Giving an AI a Face
A concept render for an AI art piece — a glass head with an LED cube suspended inside it, standing on a dock you can talk to.
An AI you speak to has no face. It answers from a speaker, or from a text box, and everything it is thinking stays invisible. This piece gives it one. A head cast in glass holds an LED cube at its centre; the cube is the thinking made visible, rendering what the system is processing as light inside the skull. The circular dock beneath it carries the technology that lets you talk to it the way you would talk to any assistant — except this one is looking back.
A face is the fastest way to make a machine feel present, and the fastest way to make it feel wrong. The concept had to read as an object worth standing in front of — sculptural, still, unmistakably a head — while staying honest about being a machine. Glass over an LED matrix does both: you are looking at a face and at the circuitry at the same time, and neither one is hidden.
The render was built to settle the design language before any hardware exists: how the glass refracts the cube, how much of the matrix should be readable through the surface, how the dock reads as a base rather than a plinth, and what the light does to the room around it. Everything is lit from the cube itself and the ring in the dock, so the piece is its own only light source — which is how it will have to work when it is built.
The concept is live work. The head is being developed as an art piece, with the dock designed to house the conversational layer so the visualisation and the voice belong to the same object.
