Vicon acquires face capture firm, closing the pipeline gap
Facial and body performance capture have always come from different vendors. That just changed.
Vicon, the motion capture hardware and software company, acquired Captive Devices in September 2026. Captive makes head-mounted camera systems for markerless facial performance capture, used by studios including Ninja Theory, Nant Studios and Animatrik. The pair is now one vendor.
That sounds incremental. It is not. Facial and body performance capture have lived in separate worlds for years: different rigs, different software, different support teams, different outputs that need stitching together before an animator sees a usable result. A studio shooting a hero character usually hired one vendor for the body, another for the face, then spent weeks solving how the two pipelines talk to each other.
Now Vicon owns both ends. One system, one team, one support line. The data integrates natively. That cuts iteration time and kills the familiar problem of tracking solve disagreements when two independent systems have computed slightly different performer position at the same frame.
what actually got acquired
Captive built the optical head-mount camera rig and the software to solve facial performance from video, without markers. The rig sits on a helmet and records the performer's face and surrounding environment in high resolution. Markerless capture removes a constraint: performers can wear makeup, prosthetics, costumes without worrying that markers will tear off or hide key features. The trade-off is the software has to be smarter.
Vicon already sold the rest: full-body mocap hardware, skeletal solve software, and integration into game engines and DCC tools. Combining these means a performance capture session now shoots both face and body in one pass, and the studio gets back a complete solve where facial expressions and skeletal data are timestamped to the same clock.
where this breaks down
Markerless face capture works well for actors and characters where detail matters. For crowd work, stunt doubles, or secondary characters, it adds cost and time that may not be worth it. A team building a battle scene with 300 background soldiers will keep using traditional body mocap and stock facial animations. Markerless face capture is still a specialist's tool for hero performances.
For measurement-dependent work like sports biomechanics or ergonomic analysis, the accuracy requirements differ from VFX. Markerless face capture gives you artistic-quality expression data. If you need sub-millimeter joint position verification, marked optical systems are still the standard. what changes for studios
Studios shooting digital humans or realistic characters now have a genuine option to de-vendor-lock their face and body pipeline. That was not true before. The alternative was always either doing facial animation by hand (slower) or paying two vendors to hand files back and forth (more expensive, more failure points).
The real cost is still the session itself: studio rental, performance director, camera operators, lighting, the performer's time. Vicon's acquisition does not drop that. What it does drop is the back-end cost and the schedule risk. A studio can now commission a performance capture session and get a complete facial and skeletal solve without paying for a second vendor's integration work.
For branded content and advertising, where budgets often sit under EUR 15,000, that shift matters. Vision For Xperiences handles character animation across budget levels, and every reduction in specialised vendor dependency makes smaller scopes more feasible. When you are working at tighter budgets, every pipeline step you can consolidate is margin you keep or price you can cut to stay competitive.
The acquisition also signals that Vicon is betting the next generation of this work is markerless. The company has always been the hardware standard for marked optical mocap. Acquiring Captive is them saying: markerless face and body capture is the direction, and we are going to own both pieces.
Facial performance capture is not new, but the infrastructure to shoot it alongside body capture without separate vendors is. That is what Vicon just closed.
